This is because he's pleaded not guilty, which I'm guessing is what your ex is pleading. My fiance had the choice of trial by jury or trial by magistrates. The time between now and the court date will be used to collect evidence, witness satatements, etc etc.
I am guessing and hoping that you are pressing charges babe. The difference in trial by jury and trial by magistrates is exactly that as I understand it.(I'm new to understanding all this myself, its only as my fiance is going through it,im learning!!-But I will try to help you where I can.)Trial by jury would be the case would be heard infront of a jury in Crown Court. The trial by magistrates would be heard infront of the magistrates. You, any other witnesses, the police who dealt with the case would all be summond to court to give evidence.Have you got anybody who can go to court with you and give you some moral support?
If he is found guilty, what his punishment will be mainly relies on if it his 1st offence of this nature or not. From what i can gather if it is his 1st offence its very unlikely that he will go to prison. When a defendant pleads not guilty,if they are found guilty by the court, they will usually recieve a harsher sentance than if they had just of pleaded guilty in the 1st place.
