slow pc - mccafee rmoved ?

Hi i have removed the Mc cafee security programme because its installation made my laptop so slow it was unuseable. Was i right? Is this common? What will happen to my pc now? Is there an alternative which wont have the same dramatic effect on my laptop. thank-you for your advice :-)

One security program should not slow your PC down that much.
If you are running a number of anti virus and security programs that could slow your computer down (each program has to "check" each file before it is used and this could make the laptop unusable).

Is it a fairly new laptop?
Does it run Vista or XP?
How much RAM has it got?
Does it run OK without McAfee installed or is it still a bit slow?
