Killing a werewolf

Okay, so I know that werewolves don't really exist, but if you can only kill a werewolf with a silver bullet how did people kill them before guns were invented?

Thanks for that folks - so, just in case, I need to carry silver and mercury bullets! A bit like Cinderella - where in the original French story she wore fur slippers but the translator got the words for fur and glass mixed up!
