german in america after 1862
what state did most the germans move to in america after the 1862 homestead act. i think it might have been decota or nebraska but i'm not sure.

but was the german populated place decota or were you jsut stating that thats what it would have been called.

Even today, both South and North Dakota have fairly large populations of German descent. Western North Dakota is the birthplace of Lawrence Welk (a famous musician of yesteryear). The North Dakotan Germans were unique in that they are still called Germans from Russia... they were forced out of Russia but adhered to their own language and culture, carried on after immigrating to the U.S.
Having lived near both states for sometime, my guess would be that South Dakota has a larger population of Germans however. But... my guess is that Wisconsin probably has a larger population than that of the Dakotas combined... (North Dakota only has a total population of near 600,000 and South Dakota about 790,000... while Wisconsin has a total of 5 and one half million....

Although the northern tier of States have a representative number of Latinos (usually Mexicans) the numbers are fairly low as compared to those of Northern European descent. Montana has on;y 2% of its population being Latinos. Whereas Native Americans represent 6.8% of the States population... due to the large number of reservations within the State.
The Irish are well represented, especailly in the city of Butte (pronounced Bewt by the way) where they came in the latter decades of the1800's drawn to the many mining jobs. One of the largest copper mines in the world is located there.
Norwegians make up a significant portion of the population, especially in the eastern Counties bordering North Dakota, which has an inordinate number of Norwegian descendants...
