Mad Max and Police Tactics

At the start of the film a couple of Cops are seen in a Car marked " Pursuit " . Much use they are and the Crim gets away - until Max joins in with his " Interceptor " . Why not just make ALL the Police Cars " Interceptors " ?

They're very expensive (for one thing, Mel Gibson's fees are astronomical, while Pursuit cars only need bit part actors to drive them). But your suggestion has been passed on to the wise men in Canberra.

I think we were supposed to believe that Max had put his car together from lots of different car parts he's found on his extensive travels whereas the cops are kindof restricted to the one area.
