you can connect as many as the number of usb ports u have--if they don't have their own power supply and draw power from the port it will all run really slow--even if they do and u r trying to do multiple burnings at once it is a bit of a waste of time--without really hi spec comp, fast processor + tons of ram, everything will take ages--also typical burning s/ware can only deal with one burn at a time so why bother--cheers
Apart from that, a decent DVD writer can write at around 20MB/s and the absolute max that a USB2 host can transfer data at is around 40MB/s, and that's assuming there is no other traffic on the bus. So even if you overcame all the obstacles mentioned by ajmmac, you'd be wasting your time considering more than two.
Also, your append heading says "Multiple hard drives" and your question says "multiple DVD writers"

They are not the same thing.

While you can probably have multiple hard drives with no problem, but as others have said, multiple dvd writers would not gain you much and may not even work.

Not sure why you would want to create multiple DVDs at the same time, unless a person wanted to copy illegal games or films, and I am sure you dont want to do that.
If you do want to create a number of DVDs at the same time then you need a DVD duplicator

well spotted vhg--must confess i was concentrating on the text of the Q and not the heading--true that multiple ext hdd's should be no problem--i have had up to 3 on occasions--cheers

im really sorry for the confusion in the title. i am talking about external dvd rewriters. i want to make copies of our family vidoes for 5 years. i will only be using this process once so there is no need for me to purchase a duplicator (very expensive).

please help me as i need a clear answe.:-)
you say "family videos"--i assume tapes--or are they video discs from a camera--either way take them to a shop or search the net for sites that do this--cheaper and quicker in the in the long run--cheers

If you want clear answers post clear questions !

If you want to create multiple DVDs you only need one DVD writer.

A single DVD writer can create one DVD at a time, but once you have created one DVD disk you can take this disk out and put another blank one in and create another disk, and so on.
The easiest way to make DVDs out of family videos is to buy a domestic DVD recorder and connect it to your TV.

I have a VHS player and a DVD recorder connected to my TV.

I put a VHS tape in the VHS payer, and a blank DVD disk in the DVD recorder.

I press PLAY on the VHS player, then RECORD on the DVD recorder, and it copies whatever is on the VHS tape onto the DVD disk.

Easy.
