Panama Canal...each year = p.a. + nama (a man reversed) + can (slang term for prison) + al (Al Capone)
Panama Canal .
Do you have No 17 please
Do you have just the tiniest clue for No 17 please ?
Question Author
Thank you for the panama answer.
I think 17 could be "wimple", there seems to be a Gilbert and Sullivan connection
I am stuck on 22 and 23
If you write out the question , instead of just a number , you will have a better chance of getting an answer .
Without a clue we haven't a clue .
Question Author
Yes. I feel as though I'm cheating but these clues are so obscure
22 In Muslim headgear the sailor received disapproval at Scottish Borders 8 letters
23....and the naval officer had no alternative - and took pot
7 letters
Thank you
22 is tarboosh . And no , you are not cheating . Looking at somebody else's answer without their consent is cheating .
23 Commode. A chair that takes a chamber pot.

Commod(or)e.
As Rollo suggests commode looks like the answer but I only hope when I get round to using one , it doesn't "go to my head" . You might consider coronet with c.o. and or and (to) net = pot but this is weaker than commode .
Bon chance .
Question Author
Thank you for barboosh, I can sort of see it. I googled commode hat and came up with this!
