funnily enough, there are people who do not believe in or wish to follow 'mainstream' fashions...so the assertion that this, that or the other is a 'no-no' is kind of pointless.

many people realise that you only get one life and prefer to live it their own way - rather than the way of a load of fashion sheep, who don't have an original idea between them...

except of course for the people who write the fashion rags...and therefore change their mind from one week to the next and know millions of stupid saps will rush out an buy more tat that will end up in the bin a month later...while they of course laugh all the way to the bank...
