I have a song on my computer that I really need to burn onto CD. It is an M3U. I have no idea how to do this. When I right click on it and try and burn (using Windows Media player) it doesn't work. Any ideas?!?!

By the way, it does at least play on my AOL media player- just not on the windows one, where I get this error message "

Windows Media Player cannot play the file. One or more codecs required to play the file could not be found."

A quick google and this answer popped-up, more easy to read it from the experts I suppose.

Forget that link Scarlett.........a million pop-ups attached, shame as originally that gave a good answer.

Basically it's a WINAMP shortcut as I see it.

WINAMP shortcut? sorry. I have no idea what that is!x
WIMAMP is another type of media player like the windows one.
Any M3U file is not actually a sound file that plays on your computer. It's a very small file which represents a playlist that someone's compiled. Effectively, if you run this file then you are instructing your PC to open a file *elsewhere*, which is why you can't create an audio CD from it : you need to burn the sound file to CD, not the shortcut to it.

Isn't there an audio file in the same folder as this m3u file? This is the one that you want to burn to CD.
Failing that, open the m3u file with Notepad and it'll point you towards the file you're after.

Stevie! I opened it in Notepad and got this...

"#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:114,Will and Hayley - Aint No Mountain High Enough

Any thoughts?

Yep, it's a shortcut (still) to a song which isn't on your hardrive but which is instead online at the link you've provided. Any time you try to listen to this you have to stream it.
Have you ever tried clicking on the m3u file while offline? It shouldn't work and should force your PC to try to connect to t'internet.

I'll see if I can add some more info later but I'm off out for a haircut and a bevvy
Just remembered, I'm banned from bevvy so me and my new haircut have this for you:

Everything's sorted here now - you can get an mp3 of the song (though why you'd want the song in the first place is another matter).

Next week, world peace.

I do so appreciate your help (and haircut) but I still can't seem to get it working...

have downloaded "save target as" from clicking on those nice pictures. But all that did was give me another copy of the M3U on my computer. It still won't burn. It still says "unexpected file format"!!

sigh..! Am I just being a spud here?
