They are the most unorganised business I have ever dealt with, - or they make it difficult by design to get extra payments from customers!. Cancel by sending recorded delivery letter giving one months notice to Customer service. Keep a copy, -follow up after a couple of weeks to confirm cancellation by phone. DONT just withold payments they will still hold you to the contract!
Had the same problem with Setana a coupole of years ago ... hate to say it but it went on for ages ... threatened legal action in the end .... if you pay by direct debit, cancel it, they are sure to get in touch if they stop receiving your payments .... that's what I had to do ............. and then when they still kept saying I owed them payments, I threatened them with watchdog, trading standard and legal action ..... good luck, think they are reknowned for it unfortunately .... hope you resolve it soon..... oh, and always ask to speak to a manager .... all respect to call centre workers, but (generally) the intial person you speak do doesn't really care whn you threaten but a manager or superviser might ... and always ask if their calls are recorded, as then they know you are serious as you are within your rights to ask for transcripts of calls if you give instructions which they fail to follow - hope this helps.
When you threaten legal action it usually works to say that you look to sue for the fact that they are causing stress .... this is usually taken seriously as people have claimed and won damages for this ..... but please don't worry, if you can help it ....... citizens advice may well also step in if you get no where.
Yes Echokilo,- stopping my payments was is fact the way I did it also, but it cost me extra payments while I waited for them to contact me and then to implement my cancellation, But a phone call alone doesn't seem to work. Through their incompetence and lack of a central database they in fact did cancel it once them restarted it !!! What a mess.
Top up TV is a ruddy nightmare, I got one from their web site and it was crap so I sent it back and all they did was lie to me constantly about my rights, fortunately I read the T & C's and there was the clause about cancellation so I phoned them back and with great reluctance they cancelled it. Im afraid that I think once you are into the contract you are stuffed but you could just cancel the D/Debit!
This worked for me - I was told tos end a letter I did, it didn't work, so I sent this recorded delivery and it worked.

Dear Sirs,
I sent the attached letter to you on the 19th of June.
My subscription has not been cancelled and you took another payment on the 14th of July.
Cancel the subscription with immediate effect or I will tell my credit card company to refuse payment.

yes it sounds like a lot of bad experiences with Setanta. Don't just stop your payments and hope they go away! - They wont, and they will be legally right in requesting payment for the term of the contract. Two good suggestions there! Make sure the letters are of the 'signed for' type. Nothboy best not get involved if you can, as an altenative a Virginmedia box gets all the Setanta included in their package.
katytwo. I sympathise with you, I bought a Thompson TopUpTv recorder via a shopping channel advertised as strictly no catches whatsover. I paid 20 for Setanta for the season and had "Free" top up for one month. They have now taken 19.98 from my credit account even though I never authorised them them to do so. I telephoned Top Up today to cancel and they told me I would still have to pay for next month as well as there is a 30day cancellation fee. What a fiddle! They said they would cancel so lets up they do, I will be more aware when Setanta is due to finish as I will have the same problem! Hope you get sorted out!! I Just thought they would automatically stop it, but apparently its all part of the "contract" which I wasn't aware I had entered.
thank you mary and all of you for your post ,i have been in touch with topuptv and was given another email address ([email protected])and was assured they would accept it and would answer it ,another 19.99 has been taken out of our bank account ,i am waiting for them to reply,i will keep you posted as soon as.Also i have had an e-mail to tell me how i can fix the freezing picture on santana,i havent tried it yet the chap said he will try and ring me if he can to talk me through it but he didn't (he wanted to ring me back when i rang in the morning but i didn't feel capable )thanks again.
i have had a letter off topuptv saying, you recently requested to change your current subscription package to the following santanta sports 1 free for 9 months .we can confirm this change has taken effect and you should now be veiwing your new package.we'll simply deduct the payments below, ect .. ...day to be debited 31st October 2008,Then the rest of the letter i couldn't understand so i had to ring them.when i went to the e-mail section i had an e-mail off them the previous day saying they had cannceled topup tv and they will refund 19.99 back into my account, when i rang they said the letter was sent before the e-mail so take no notice of the letter. Thanks to scrambler ,echokilo, eastern, haggisdj davethedog northboy and mary T.i know this has been long winded but i'm not very good at writing, the address to cancel is [email protected] i hope this will help someone, katytwo
