It won't hurt the cat, but it certainly will scare it. You will only have to do this a few times, and the cat will soon get the hang of it, and stay away from your garden. Hope all goes well, as your cat at his age should be having some peace and quiet, and be able to enjoy his own garden. Good luck. Schutz.
Just the advice i was going to post.
because cats are territorial, the other cat will have sensed the waekness and vulnerability in your cat, and decided to make a take-over bid.
This is perfectly natural and normal cat behaviour, but obviously you are going to stick up for your cat, and sending out a message that it's your terriroty, and you are not to be messed with, will send the pretender off to find some easier ground to move into.

thank you both very much for your suggestions. i have tried this but because i have a large garden as soon as the cat hears my door open he's off and iv'e never caught him with a jet of water, yet, at night he even goes into our cellar last week he duffed up my cat and their was blood and fur all up the walls and on the floor , neadless to say it was my cat's blood and fur
Oh! dear, that's awful. Isn't there some way you can keep the other cat out of the cellar. Could you possibly obtain a wire meshed covered, rabbit or chicken run, for the garden, so that your cat could have some freedom outside, without the other cat being able to get at him. Another possibility is if you have wooden fencing around the garden, you can buy Lion poo from Zoo's, over the internet. This you can put in a bucket with water, stir until it is liquid, and then brush along the tops of the fences (all round the garden). It won't smell strong to humans, but it certainly will frighten the other cat away, and stop it from coming over the fence. Failing these two suggestions, I don't know what else to think. Will keep trying to think of something.
