My cats purr

Heya got my cat when he was 6 weeks old,very affectionate and you only had to look at him and he purred.Now hes 6 months and is still very affectionate but purrs really really quietly almost like a whisper,I havn't heard him purr properly for months.Has he lost his purr??

The simple truth is, experts don't know for certain how cats actually make the noise when they purr, or what definitive behaviour makes them do it.

So don't panic too much about your cat. It may be that he used to purr loudly to communicate with you - his pack leader - but now he is settled down, he doesn;t need to dial up the volume, so he just gives a small purr to let you know he is OK.

He will show you in other ways if he is not happy - 'crying' and being restless are the two most obvious.

yes andy is right....this morning Rocky aged 7 months, kept on and on at me to get up, it was about 6.15.pm. wouldnt let me ignore him. he was jumping up and down, making funny noises, so we came down and he made straight for the back door, bless him he needed the toilet, bit like us I spose.

anyway my cat doesnt purr much, he is contented but u can stroke him loads but he wont purr, but he will purr very loudly when hes on the bed when u go to bed at night or in the morning.

It just underlines the well-known fact - owners train their dogs, cats train their owners.

Thank you guys,as i said he is still very affectionate and loves to dribble on me at 5am its just because i thought abt it the other day and couldnt remember the last time i heard :0)

i have two cats - one purrs like a train and the other simply does a little heavy breathing. it is a case of each to his or her own! he may not necessarily have lost his purr, but as he has grown it may have changed. unless he is under the weather or looks unkempt, i wouldn't worry too much x
