I have an 'M' reg Merc. The windscreen wiper has ceased to work. I have checked all the fuses, all are o.k.

According to the Haynes manual, I can only remove the wiper-motor now. This involves a lot of 'palarva'. The wiper-motor is working so If I can I should like to remove the Black cover from the outside.
Can this be done?

HELP please.

Hi, I do not know the model, look under the bonnet towards the lower end of the Windscreen, there should be what you say a black removable cover, Before you start this with your wipers switched on try the i different speeds, are they all OK? you said the motor is working!! can you hear it? if that's the case the probably cause may be the connecting wiper arms, check that the nut is tight, if they are OK the next thing to check is the link rods within the bulk head, they connect via a connecting snap on ball effort ( Its not a big job). the result will be interesting.
The black thing is called a scuttle and it does have to be removed to do any work on the wiper system. As TWR suggested, it does sound like the linkage may have come adrift. It should be fairly easy to put it back together but you may have to buy new washers & split-pin or circlip. Those items are dirt cheap.

TWR, I have run the motor and can hear it. My next check is the linkage, but how does the Black cover come off. Is it just snap-on? My thoughts were, it was connected from underneath.

The model by the way is a C Class 4-door saloon.

Thankyou anyway.
Hi Vince, as stated the plastic BUTTON CLIPS are in your view when you look at the cover/Scuttle you can either use a Knife or a flat blade screwdriver to remove them, there may be about 6 depending on the size of your cover, when you have removed it before you start to remove the links make sure you have the in the right position to remove & replace, Its not a big job the new links have a snap ball connector that POPS into the cups.

Hi TWR. I have tried removing the cover, but there seems to be some resistance. Are you sure it just snaps-on and off?
The plastic seems too brittle. Will it come off with perseverance?

Hi, just got in, Some of these button press studs have a centre pin, its about the size of a match but circular & about 1/4 ins in length, if this is the type use a very small philips driver and push the pin in-wards to release the press stud, the Cover/scuttle should then remove, Do not force it Vince, I cannot picture the Cover but it will be simular to the rest. contact the site if you come unstuck.
