Big tips?

After you've had a meal out, do you automatically leave a tip?
I had a meal the other day, the bill came to just over twenty quid. I handed twenty five quid to the waitress, and she said "Do you need any change?"
It made me chuckle - she was a canny lass indeed.

There was a last minute change of plan, Mrs. Chappie! As reported on said thread.
A lot of the restaurants I've been to recently are now charging a service charge, so the matter is now taken out of your hands. The whole idea of a tip is that it is a gratuity, bestowed upon whomever at the diner's discretion.
There was a case recently in NY where a diner, having refused to leave a tip due to the shoddy service, was arrested and had his fingerprints taken. He subsequently sued and won his case.

I will generally leave a tip if the service is good (and usually it is). However I object to having a service charge put on the bill, if it's optional I won't pay it and still leave a tip. If it's not optional then I won't as I find that quite annoying.
On the rare occasions when the service has been bad then I don't leave any tip.

I always delete an 'added' service charge, and if i wish to tip, I do so.
I will complain if food or service is bad - theBritish are so bad at this - they moan to each other, or other diners, and then boycott the restaurant, instead of telling the people who can put things right.
Tipping the in U.S. is far more common - indeed a lot of waiting and bar staff are taxed on their tips, the assumption being that they receive them as a matter of course, which in their cutlure is expected.
The Brits. feel it is demeaning to tip, or they feel uncomfortable, or they are just too mean.
My daughter worked as an evening waitress and found as a general rule that nice people tipped, miserable or troublesome ones didn't, even though the service given was conststant. I always approved of the fact that all tips were pooled and divided up at the end of the night between everyone - even the dishwasher got an equal share - the owner believing that all his staff contribute to a diner's experience, all should share in any rewards.
