Money ive lent to a ****....

So. One of our neighbours, whom previously we have got on with, recently lent �30 off us.
Since then, it has come about through information i didnt know when i lent him money, that he is a serial money borrower and never pays people back. HUMPH! So, what are my legal rights to threten him with to get this money back? A friend of ours lent him money previously in the region of hundreds of pounds ''for a mortgage problem'' and had to go through alot to get it back. I know this may sound petty as its over a small amount of �30, but its the principle....and i want new dress. Help pllllllease, any suggestions welcome. (P.S...hes asked we dont tell his wife hes borrowed money...shes quite fragile, so i dont want to just go knocking on the door and killing her with shock, so again, any suggestions/answers) Thanks!

when did he say he'd pay you back? have you asked for the money back?

Have you actually asked him for it back or are you posting merely because of rumour?

Was there a time limit set to pay it back by? You cannot assume he will not pay it back just because your 'friend' took a whle to retrieve his �100

Suggestions? Next time you see him tell him you will need the �30 back by such and such date please

He said he would pay it back 2 weeks ago, and i said that would be fine. But no money appeared, then I saw him on Tuesday of this week, and he said i would have the money back by Wednesday evening. I said this was great, as i need the money back for the weekend...it actually needs to go into my bank for direct debits. So as nothing has appeared, im thinking im going to have to go round and ask for it, i hate confrontation but hes taking the micky slightly i feel...

Tell his wife (fragile or not) She may be the only person he listens to.. And what does fragil entail?

The wife is recovering from breast cancer, and is in and out of hospital. The whole thing sounds very petty when you put it aside suffering cancer, but at the end of the day, im not a bank and i have a young child that eats alot of food!

just go around there, say youve had an unexpected bill that needs sorting and that you need that �30 back immediately,
If his wife answers the door then ask her to pass the message on.

The state of his wife is not relevent here. He may say that simply to stop you hassleing to get your money back.

Knock on his door when you know he is in and just ask for it. You don't have to (at this stage) get heavy with him. Just a ' I wondered if you have that money as I have a bill to pay' It shows him you need it and that at the end of the day you are not afriad to come and get it. If his wife is there it isn't your problem. It is up to him what he says about it.

I don't know the circumstances of the other people not getting their money. Perhaps they didn't ask much and were too emabarrased to badger him for it.

This is exactly the sort of thing that reminds me why I never lend anyone money as a matter of rule.

i was in the same situation, turns out the blokewas a drug addict. I tod the police about not payng back the money, it came out that he had done the same thing about 20 times, he got 4 weeks in jail. CALL THE POLICE!

..i have acted upon the advice of going round, reguardless of his wife. I told him i need to money by this evening as it needs to be in my bank, or id need to take further action. Now its a waiting game!!
I think calling the police at this stage is abit extreme, but im sorry to hear you the same experience!

Tell him firmly to give you it back or you will tell his wife. I doubt the Police will be interested in somebody not giving you back �30. Tell everybody that knows him.
