Right. Bought a new USB2 Hi-speed card whjich came with a driver disk. Fitted the card into a slot OK and put the lid back on and restored all connections, but the USB connector is a very tight fit in the new port(s) and I don't think it is fully home as I don't want to force it.

Switched on the power - nothing. PC does not start up. The only way I can get it to work is to replace the USB connector in the old USB1 port. Any idea what moght be wrong ? Should I run the driver disk and then connect to the new port(s) ? How do I get the connector to fit in smoothly ? Can I use a bit more push ?

Don't panic ! Think I've got it sorted. Had the connector upside down ! PC working OK now. Seems I don't have to load the driver disk - correct ? Thanks. D

Start panicking again! PC running OK but new USB2 ports not working ( won't operate printer etc). Have had to reconnect to old USB1 port. Any suggestions ? The driver disk doesn't run or seem to do anything. Will I have to check that the USB card is fully pressed home ? Seemed alright to me.
start -settings - control panel- system.hardware- device manager. check to see if your USB controllers are installed
the reason they include a driver is that you are supposed to install it

windows (which version? ... usb1.1 generally means 98, me, 2000)

cards are tough
make certain it's all the way home... double check the connectors .... and only then switch on

you could have damaged the mobo already ... once the machine is on ... it should give the detected new hardware ... and then ask for the driver disk

but check the instructions ,,, and make certain that the mobo and os are supported

Thanks, all. Let's try to make this clear.

It's Windows 2000XP with service pack 3 with USB1 port.

Trying to fit a USB2 (Hi-Speed) card with four ports.

No instructions supplied with USB2 card and no on-screen request to insert diver CD. When I do insert the driver CD there are no on-screen instructions and it does not run automatically.

What are Mobo and OS ?

Mission accomplished ! All up and running. I put the card in another slot without any problems. No request for drivers and disk did not run when inserted - but seems OK.

Thanks to you all.

put the cd into the cd drive and installed the softwares in the computer .
