legend credits Patrick with banishing snakes from the ireland, though all evidence suggests that post-glacial Ireland never had snakes. one suggestion is that snakes referred to the serpent symbolism of the Druids of that time and place, as shown for instance on coins minted in Gaul , or that it could have referred to beliefs such as Pelagianism, symbolized as serpents. Legend also credits Patrick with teaching the Irish about the concept of the Trinity by showing people the shamrock, a 3-leaved clover, using it to highlight the Christian belief of 'three divine persons in the one God' (as opposed to the Arian belief that was popular in Patrick's time).

Happy St Patricks Day All! What is the name of the phobia for snakes, please? Snakes scare me. Remember on holiday in a part of the UK seeing a chalk board with all the wildlife that had recently been spotted- on there it said adders ( UK's only venomous snake)! Let's say, did not linger in that place for long! Never seen a snake except for at a zoo + even then they scared me! Wish St Patrick had driven them out of the UK, too! Think the worst of all the snakes are probably in Australia- did St Patrick send them there? Know that Oz has the highest number of all dangerous animals in one country- methinks will not be visiting there in a hurry?! Love the Oz people + their sense of humour however. Really would love to go to Ireland one day- especially like to see The Giant's Causeway!! Warmest wishes on a sunny St Patrick's Day to you all :-)
