Maybe you could just paint or stain them a different colour. Try putting new knobs/handles on them. You could cover the tops with something like glass, leather, stainless steel, depending on your tastes.

You could sand/rub down the tops of the dressing table & bedside cabinet tops. Then apply Briwax med brown stain/polish. I use this on our antique pine bedroom furniture & it works a treat. Good luck.

* I meant stain/wax (not polish) - I don't like shiny surfaces!
Using a multi purpose primer (Zinsser is really good & you can paint over it with any oil or water based paint) Follow with a few coats of matt emulsion in your chosen colour followed by a few coats of acrylic varnish (matt) Highlight edges with gold or silver wax (available in small tubes & pots from most art stores) Apply with finger and when dry buff with a soft cloth.  If done properly, this leaves a lovely finish & looks really expensive. (cream & gold looks really nice as does dark colours highlighted with the gold)
