having to put our dog to sleep
17 Answers
hi, my wifes dog has had to be put to sleep (yesterday) we have had him for almost 13 years and he was definatly my wifes best friend and companion they were never apart, i am having a problem expressing my thoughts to my wife in trying to console her, benjamine was a real family orintated pet who loved everyone but was my wifes pride and joy, she is totally devastated by his death, the only bright point is he recently fathered a litter of 11 pups 2 of which we are having, i am looking for some advice from you good animal lovers on what to say, do suggest to my wife to try and make her feel that she is, was and allways will be a part of poor benjamins life, as i hate to see her like this, your thoughts, comments would be appreciated, many thanks john.

Sorry about Benjamine, I know what it's like to have a beloved pet put to sleep, happened to me a while ago. All you can do is get some comfort in that you gave him a good happy life.

i really dont know what to tell you, i have found in the past year when i lost our dog that coming on here and talking to like minded people has helped me no end it has been easier to pour my heart out on here then talk to my family ,rainbow bridge is a lovely poem but it will make her cry i am sure, i cant read it without crying ,bejamin will never leave her he will always be there beside her love to you both ruth
I think the best thing for you to do for your wife is to tell her she has nothing to reproach herself for, he was well loved and cared for and that is the main thing. He sounds as if he has had a good life with you and your wife, tell her to think about all the poor souls who are put to sleep and have know one to cry or miss them , some who have hardly had a life and some who have a terrible time.He is at rest now playing over Rainbow Bridge and for the future his babies live on.We have all had this awful situation , it will get easier in time, but he will always leave paw prints on your heart.g.
Hi john
My dog got put down a few years ago and I was so upset. He was my best friend and would have done anything for me, the worst of it was that he was only about 2 years old. I knew it had to be done though, I now know he is free from pain and I'm sure he's still running about somewhere being naughty! A lot of people think losing a pet isn't as bad as losing a person but if you think about it a dog has unconditional love for you, would protect you and be your best friend forever, maybe they're better than people lol! My fondest memory of my dog was him sitting next to me on the doorstep, proud as punch and whenever I cried he would sit next to me and try to lick my tears. It takes a while to get over and crying is good to release the pain. Give it time and your wife will slowly get over it and have happy memories of Benjamin

I am sorry to hear of your loss. As hard as it seems right now, time will heal your wifes pain, and she will be able to remember her pet with fond memories of the good times.
Am I right in thinking the dog was in excess of 13 years old, and reading your post correctly he has recently sired a litter of puppies?

Aww I am sorry if Rainbow Bridge makes you cry, it makes me cry as well, but it also brings me some comfort. I like to think that my old cat Puss is waiting for me in sunny green meadows and until then is playing with all the other cats and dogs. Well cats perhaps good old Puss wasn't too keen on dogs but I'm sure that he is besty mates now with Benjamine. xx
to all you good people who have replied to my post THANK YOU, you have made even me shed a few tears but most of all my wife haseagerly read your posts and understands that she is not alone, the poem is a big hit with her, especially the paragragh, (your face is kissed again and again), this is the one thing benjamine only did to my wife, so once again thank you all, john.
zxr69, I've just read your post - I'm so sorry to hear about your lovely dog. It's always so sad (and difficult for some folk to understand) when we lose a beloved pet, but all of us who post on her understand and sympathise. When my dear old Zak (GSD) had to be put down at 15 years of age, we all cried for weeks, and then there was Sherman - he was my hubby's dog (also GSD) and doted on him. Sadly, I lost my husband in 2005 and then poor Sherman just went to pieces. He wouldn't eat, just laid on the rug in our living room, looking sad, then he turned nasty and attacked my collie and nearly killed him, so I made the difficult decision to have him put down. It broke my heart, especially as I'd promised my hubby that I'd look after him. I still have his sister, Elsa, who is my baby - an absolute star, even now, at 10 years old. We all know how you and your wife feel, but just be glad that you gave Benjamin a great life and you loved him. He's waiting for you, on Rainbow Bridge. Love, K xxx
