cd/dvd drives stopped running

The cd player and the dvd/rw have stopped running on my Dell Dimension 5150, The trays open and close then a spinning noise for a few seconds then nothing. Ideas please?

the disk which you want to play should be bad or scratched .

try to use new cd or dvd .

restarted the computer try again.

installed the cd drive driver.

How old is your PC? Or is it a lap top? Sometimes this can indicate a virus which can get into your system and wipe the drives so your PC wont recognise them..this happened to my lap top last year...

You could try a system restore to get your pc back to an earlier date when your drives were working....when you start your pc at the boot menu, try pressing F11 continuously and this should prompt your pc into restoring itself to an earlier date....you can do it manually - if you go into your start menu, 'Accessories' then choose 'system tools' and 'system restore' - good luck....

Thanks have tried that tho, and re-installing drivers but to no avail! Maybe its time for a new pc, it is getting on a bit - 3 years!!
