Transfering emails to harddrive

I use microsoft outlook for my emails. I want to transfer some of the emails on to a folder on the 'c' or another drive on the computer so that I can keep them properly under subject heading etc. Can it be done for a stand alone home computer?
I have heard a friend mention pst file but I don't know the procedure.
