Ive been having problems with my son (16 months) and his sleeping ... he wakes alot through the night and its got to the point where its easier to sleep with him (in his room) on a single mattress.

I made the deicision the other day to make up a bed for him on his floor before deciding whether it would be a good plan to get him a toddler bed. I brought in the single mattress from the bunk beds we have and also padded up around the mattress that was not against any wall, etc. He went to bed at his normal time of 7.30pm (we have a cuddle before he goes to sleep) but did wake at 10pm and 11pm for a few mins (I just tapped his back to calm him down and he fell asleep). It was only when I woke at 4.30am that I was shocked ... no crying since 11pm. I was a little unsure if he was ok so I popped my head into his room and he was still asleep even though he had rolled off the mattress but was on the padding Id put around the mattress. I left him then didnt hear from him til 5.50am. He wouldnt settle til he had his bottle and then fell back asleep til 7.20am where I was then greeted by him walking into my room as I was getting dressed - very cute.

Does anyone know where I can get some form of bed guard from as I dont really want to get him the toddler bed - Id prefer to get a full size one that is lower to the ground. I really do think that he does not like the cot as it is too restrictive for him .... sounds silly but I really do think this is the problem. I am still a little scared that as he moves about that much in his sleep that a guard may not work!!!

Any ideas on where I could maybe get a full size single bed that is lower to the ground with some form of guard on it??

Cheers

We used to have one from ikea that was low to the ground, full width, and had two ends that could either lie flat to give a full size bed or be fitted facing upwards to form bed ends - the mattress came in 3 peices to slot into the sections and it had a little bed guard that slotted into one side - it was absolutely briliant, but I am not sure if they still do the same one - they do have extending beds for kids though, so those will probably be low as well.
This is a picture of the bed we had, but it seems they only do the bed rail now :

They do however do other extendable beds:

They are all 90 cms wide which is the same width as normal single.

Hi Annie - yes Ive been to IKEA and seen the blue bed you showed ... Im just worried that as it doesnt cover the entire side of the bed he would some how fall out! Will try and see if I can get my hands on some bed that I can put the full rail on - how much of a nightmare is this. Always worrying about something they do!!
Hi tgm - my kids were in those beds from about 13 months because they were climbers and it was safer to be in something lower - they were always restless sleepers and we never had one fall out - the beds are literally about 6 inches off the ground anyway and when they are sleeping they are so floppy that they probably wouldn't even notice. My six year old fell out of a normal bed one night - we heard the thump downstairs and when we went into his room, he was still sound asleep and had managed to drag his duvet with him!

You could always get a mid sleeper bed and chop the legs shorter - they have quite a high rail that runs more or less the full width of the bed.

or bunk beds that split into two and just make up the top bunk with the rail round it - not closer to the floor than a normal bed, but very secure.
