Valley with thanks = valeta
Question Author
I thought that too, but I hadn't been able to find any reference to it with that spelling!

Old oboe = hautboy

Valeta is confirmed in Chambers Dictionary though one has to look at veleta to get a definition (9th edition).

Thanks! I've just managed to find plenty of references on Google by using Advanced Search. Never trust technology!
Could 3 be a straightforward clue for a Trombone?
Question Author
Trombone was something I considered but it had already been featured in another question in the quiz. Just wondered if it was refering to another word or variation of pitch, ie. tar, tone or such like and then something relating to slide. Maybe I'm just making it too complicated for my own good!?
What is this quiz you are doing? Can anyone join in?

Its local to my area.Costs a pound to enter and you get until a certain date to do it. Raises money for Save the Children fund. I can give you the address for the lady who runs it. She does several a year. Last one was on pairs or partners like Laurel and Hardy, etc. The same people seem to win time after time! But it's fun and keeps the brain active.
