Head Gasket

If I get the Head Gasket replaced on an otherwise excellent condition 1998 Rover 200 at a cost of  �520  how long can I expect it to hold for? Is it possible it will need to be replaced again?

Around 5v days thats how long they had mine.

What engine is your Rover 200?

It is a 1.4i 8 valve. I do approx 200 miles per week, and it has  done 68500 miles.

Rover engines, particularly the 1.4 for some reason are prone to head gaskets blowing. I think its to do with the all alluminium construction. They go often and you must get the head checked for warping. If it is warped, it must machined and pressure tested as this will no doubt cause the problem to re-occure sooner than not. Good luck. Oh and by the way...make sure that you have the head blots replaced, as these go all the way into the bottom of the engine block and they are stretch bolts, so if you re-use them they will more often than not, snap, and oh boy thats an expensive job to fix.

Okay, K8 engine (more reliable than the K16 engine).  It should be okay after you're replaced the head gasket.  Just ensure that the head and engine block is checked for pitting if the coolant hasn't been replaced frequently.

When I worked as a Rover mechanic we'd very rarely have to replace the same car headgasket twice and we never had any problems with the head bolts or head warping.

Oh just one thing, ensure that your cambelt is replaced at the same time of head gasket being fitting.  The cambelt isn't normally replaced until 96,000 miles but best to be safe than sorry.
