Internment was an absolute disaster in the 70s in Northern Ireland.

It caused masses of protests and international condemnation.

It was the IRA's greatest recruiting weapon.

So no it would be an incredibly stupid thing to do
I wouldn't like to see internment introduced again. It wasn't effective when used in Northern Ireland. It helped radicalise a generation and encouraged American citizens to support the IRA with funding because they viewed Republicanism as oppressed by the British state. If used again, I think it would help to radicalise more young Muslims and encourage increased overseas contributions to militant Muslim organisations in this country.

So jake whats your alternative for the pqakistani 20 then ?

A rail pass 2 free mobile phones , as much semtex as they can load in a rucksack and a spare passport to flee the country?

Given the alternative id lock them up.

Do the traing camp?

Well go to the internment camp.

Fair deal in my eyes.
The problem is that internment creates so much resentment and hatred within the community it's directed at that your 20 will very soon become 200, will very soon become 2000.
To say it was disastrous in the north of Ireland is a massive understatment. It's very hard to remain level headed when you see good innocent people's doors kicked in and them dragged off to god know where without charge and without having comitted a crime. Given the climate here with regards to things I think it would potentially be the worst thing you could do.

As i said nox done the terrorist training camp?
If so

They should do the internment camp.

Seems simple enough to me.

Announce that anyone found to have atended these will be considered an enemy of the state and be interned.
Lock people up without charge and without a trial?

Isn't that exactly against one of the things we are supposed to fighting against?
Firstly people need to stop being such lilly livered hand wringers running around like frightened rabbits whenever the press runs a story like that.

Must be a great game in the press run a story about lots of supposedly scary terrorists in the country and watch everybody run about pleading for a draconian authoritarian response.

Where are you getting this from - the same people who told you that Saddam could launch WMDs in 40 minutes?

Is this really the country that weatherred the Blitz with massive destruction and thousands dead.

The 7/7 bombings were 4 years ago and you're still running scared the moment the media rattles your cage?

In modern conficts the winners are often determined not by the number of people that you kill but by the losses and risks the sides are prepared to take.

Internment is exactly what they'd want you to do

What we need to do is face up to them and show that we're not frightened - not easy with posts like this
By the way before I'm accused of being easy with people's safety I should point out that I grew up in London in the 70s and 80s in the height of the IRA bombing campaign.

We didn't stop using the tube or going into town for a night out and I married an Irish girl.

I hate to say it but I feel like this generation is badly failing it's test
I posted a similar post to this yesterday where you,(Jake) threw down the gauntlet to me by asking me to tell you why I thought Sharia Law could come here, I did answer you yesterday and today have also posted about the radicalision of young men who travel freely back and forth to Kashmir and Pakistan for training with both the Taliban and Al Queda, now they abou to name 20 of them.
I don't consider myself as a lilly-livered hand-wringer as you colourfully put it, I am not blinkered to the fact that we should be aware of this and debate it as we are.
so is jake just arguing for arguings sake?

and doesnt have an answer himself?

thtas not very clever really is it ?
Wouldn't it help if the authorities in Pakistan acted in a positive manner if they seem to know so much about the activities of certain UK residents when the latter are in Pakistan?

I mean, if these would-be terrorists are up to no good in Pakistan, why wait until they're back in the UK, THEN tell us?
It's a bit like shutting the gate after the horse has bolted! Plus, it's also putting the onus on the UK authorities to do something to people who may not have committed any offences here, but who MIGHT?

Septic Peg 'ere: Pass me me crystal ball, please!!

P.S. Internment NOT the answer !!!
The answer is to 'get rid of them'. And dont tell me it cant be done.

If our security services are unsure give the ruskies a call , they will soon put them right.

Unfortunatley internment does cause martyrdom. It is fine if we are fully at war but we are not, only the ragheads have delared it not us.

A tougher line is needed, but we wont get it with the limpwristed liberal brigade shouting their gobs off.

and yes I too worked in London through teh IRA campaigns and I still do now despite the terrorists. Brits do have backbone but they are sick of our spineless government.
Do we lock people up on the say so of a government these days? Is that what paranoia has reduced us to? We're just bypassing centuries-old legal principles?

Weird. I thought we were made of sterner stuff.

Just out of interest - if the British government raided your local pub and arrested 20 of the locals and locked them up without trial because it said they'd been training and plotting to overthrow the government, would you be fine with that?

When their family and friends and neighbours started a campaign to get them a fair trial, would you be with them or against them?

I think what I'm asking is, do you automatically trust what the British government says? If not, why do you trust what the Pakistan government says?
I liked what Quinlad said. If not all then most of governments recently have been giving wrong information to their people and that is the reason this world is becoming more and more dangerous place to live in. For Pakistan government (present and previous), I can only say one thing. First of all Musharaf being president played with the fear of the West and now the face is changed but act is same. Asif Zardari is doing the same thing. He is destroying whole country only to fill up his personal bank accounts and those of few others with him. Pakistan need more help to deal with these terrorists has become an every day statement. At least people in Pakistan have understood it. But unfortunately due to the complicated system they are unable to do any thing. They still are not willing to understand.
Sorry, the last sentence "they still are............... was supposed to be for Western governments.
