Floor Covering......

I'm replacing the floor covering in the living room but don't know whether to go for a new carpet (which the dog will blacken within a month) or oak flooring (which my daughter says is noisy and dusty)...........suggestions please?

We've got stripped pine floors downstairs - but they were there when we moved in look lovely and easy to keep clean with the dog and my 2 in and out from the garden.

In the winter (well it is still down now) we put a rug on the longue floor but take it up usually April and put away.
