Operation Centre World Map

In most pictures of operations centres, wether it be NORAD, NASA, ICBM facilities or any other operations centre, they tend to have an image of a world map with wavy lines going accross it from west/east. Any ideas on what it is called? Or what the lines represent? Thanks
