The nails on both my big toes are tough, I find them v/difficult to cut even after soaking in hot water and using nail clippers, anyone know how I can soften them so as to be able to cut them.
They ruin my tights my shoes-socks. Thankyou in advance.

Try filing them straight across. I believe there is something that you can buy that softens the nail. Have you checked the possibility of a fungus?
Bearing in mind that these are 'dead', it will not hurt you to file them across the flat part of the nail - the bit you put nail varnish on. I have 2 toenails that if i did not file in this way, would grow naturally in a thick sort of peak (yergh). You can then paint on a basecoat and a colour and it all looks normal.
I`ve had this problem, and as a disabled person and unable to reach my feet, a podiatrist filed them down quite a lot. Now I get them done every two months.

Thankyou for your remedies. Yes filing is an option but I need to cut otherwise I get ingrowing toe nails (painful) I go to the HTA toenail cutting servise but they charge 15 a time & one is watching pennies,
Has anyone got the name of the nail softener?
