Safe Cracking

We have all seen a movie in whch a thief, or spy cracks a safe simply by turning the dial and listening with their ear or a stethoscope. Is this possible, or simply done in the movies?

I did this once on a big old safe we had at work. Stuck my ear against it and could hear all the clicks. How surprised was I that it went clunk and opened. beginners luck probably.
