But it is sensible to have an adequate firewall, up to date virus potection, and spyware removal software anway.

a lot of the free ones were, but since the latest media hype surrounding adware/spyware many of them have taken to not including it, but restricting a few features such as number of results per search. If you aren't sure and usually the developers site makes it as unclear as possible goto tucows.com or download.com. download.com has now refused to allow any program with adware or spyware UNLESS you can choose to install it but tucows still has some on it's site just look at the license type.
