i recently removed all of the dead branches from the bottom of my row of conifers and now the area looks very bare, is there any plants which will be suitable for growing in the beds underneath the conifers

Have a look at the site 'Plants for Shade'. This will give you plenty of choice, both for wet and dry shade- I imagine that yours will be the latter. Prior to planting it would be a good idea to apply a light general fertilizer to the ground. Hope this is of help.
I think you will find that because of the fairly shallow and "hungry" root system it will be a very short list( except for places that wish to sell regardless). In addition the needle fall stifles any but the most pernicious weeds from growing what would help would be if the site is very damp then you could probably even have cranberries growing!!
Try Aubresia and Campanular, but you will have to keep watered regulary. I also have bluebells growing quite well under mine.
