Fry a bayleaf and a little garlic in butter, add cream, salt, black pepper, nutmeg and gorgonzola. And dash of sherry wouldn't do this dish any harm. And you can still smother this with your parmesan cheese and your butter-fried mushrooms.

apex204 - just had another idea. Tin of tomatoes, finely chopped garlic, salt, black pepper, balsamico vinegar and, if you can get hold of it, a handful of Thai basil. Blend, heat up gently and slap on your gnocci. This would also be an answer to the "what can I cook for tea tonight in five minutes" type question.

It really is worth tracking down - a fantastic combination of basil and liquorice.
