Do you believe Brown's commitment in sending another 1000 troops to be a temporary measure to oversee elections in Afghanistan? Do you get the sense that Obama has scratched his back over the 20 nation summit and a favour is required in return? As this is an unwinnable war specify a year when you think our troops will start to be withdrawn?

Quite agree. You could tell by the G20 meeting Obama was softening Brown up for a favour. And like Blair before him he fell for it. One of these days we will get a Prime Minister who looks after Britain's interests first. We have seen above European countries prosper because they don't need to punch above their weight in protecting the world whilst the British people suffer.
"They said the increase would only be temporary."

They said they would only be in Sierra Leone for a couple of months and they are still there 4 years later!

No need to soften Brown up for a favour, all our politicians are putty in the American's hands. Perhaps things would be different if their family had persons in the military, or perhaps if they themselves had some experience.

You don't get the French or the Germans willing to put the lives of their young men at risk.

Since Russia has already had a go at Afghanistan, and Obama is warming to the Ruskies, why doesn't he ask them to send in troops?

In this season of bon cordialle and the inability of the West to find troops for Afghanistan why don't they get some Russian soldiers working alongside NATO. They would gladly see the back of Taliban and Al Qaeda. You have to think out of the box sometimes!
