We feel our water rates are excessive and are considering having a water meter fitted. Has anyone done this and do you save money? At the moment my son is still at home (on and off), but soon there will be only two of us here. I don't think we are particularly wasteful with water. TIA
Six Years ago I lived in a 2 Bed House and my Water Charges were 30+ Per Month.
Currently living in a 1 Bed Flat with Water Meter and my monthly Water Charges are 13 per Month.
Big difference, so I would consider changing if I were you, especially if you are not heavy users.
Thanks for all your answers. I thought I had seen other people commenting before ummmm, but no link came up when I asked the question.
Looks hopeful that we may save some money then! Every bit helps!
It should be noted that although you pay for what you use and what is flushed away .i.e Sewerage Charges, the Sewerage Water does not go back down the same Meter!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL
It is calculated on the basis that 95% of used water is deposited in the Sewers (Household Users) Business user have a different rate.
The Monthly /Annual Water Meter Charges are inclusive Charges i.e Water used + Sewerage
Ive had a water meter for 2 years and I've never regretted it. Water bills are so much lower but I suppose it depends on how many are in your house. It would probably be more expensive for a large family. My local water authority, Southern Water, are to make them compulsory by 2012 so I've been informed.
i used to work for a housing authority and a guy found out that he was charged for sewage water to, so he disconnected all pipes (except toilet) from the soil pipe and rigged up a system so it went into his garden with the thinking that he wouldn't get charged if it didn't leave his property.
He thought he was so clever until it was pointed out to him that it was calculated from the amount of water going in
Many thanks for all your replies. I have completed the online questionnaire on the link provided by hc4361 and from that it seems we will definitely save some money!
I had a water meter fitted in Jan 2006. Wish I'd done it before. My bills are issued twice a year (march and sept) and just had the latest one. I was paying approx 30 a month before the meter and since having the meter it works out at 9.50-10.00 a month.
