Becoming a social worker

I have an honours degree in sociology & history.

I graduated in 2007 & went travelling soon after. Since returning I have been working as a PA.

Anyway I want to now become a social worker, is there any way to do this without having to do another degree?

Ideally I would like to work with children & young people in hospital.

Anyone do this? or have any advice??

In order to become a Social Worker you will have to complete a degree.

If you particularly want to work within a hospital setting, it might be worth checking out the NHS careers website (http://www.nhscareers.nhs.uk/) as there may be alternative careers that will interest you, which won't involve undertaking another degree.

you could also look at an access course on to the masters in socila work . You are best to aim for a masters in Social work as it is a more recognised qualification universally. Try looking for diploma in social policy and social work as an access to the masters. Your honours degreee will gain you some credits for further training. Good luck

It would help your chances if you could get some practical experience in either a voluntary setting or in a care setting so that you can demonstrate your interpersonal skills.

You will not be able to do another 3 year batchelors degree in Social Work unless you pay the fees yourself. If you don't have the funds, then you are able to apply for a Career Development Loan up to �8000. The better option is to do a Masters in Social Work. There is a lot of competition for places and you need to have some experience of working with people. The course is two years long but the majority of the fees are paid and you will be eligible for a bursary from the GSCC. You will need to research Universitys that offer this Masters Degree and contact them directly for information. The GSCC will be able to advise you on funding. Good luck!
