Parkinson slams Goody
50 Answers
He said: "Jade Goody has her own place in the history of television and, while it's significant, it's nothing to be proud of. Her death is as sad as the death of any young person, but it's not the passing of a martyr or a saint or, God help us, Princess Di.
"When we clear the media smoke screen from around her death, what we're left with is a woman who came to represent all that's paltry and wretched about Britain today.
"She was brought up on a sink estate, as a child came to know drugs and crime, was barely educated, ignorant and puerile. Then she was projected to celebrity by Big Brother and became a media chattel to be exploited til the day she died."
What did you think?
I am gonna be brave and say I happen to agree with the guy!

Was Parky right to slate Jade ?
I believe he was right to slate all the media generated hype and hoo-hah.
I also believe that she was seen, by those of a certain social demogaphic, as patron saint for the 'Underclass'.........
I spoke to the sister at our health centre yesterday who said that, historically, it is the 25-35 year old age group who have failed to take up smear-tests.................a fact that has now gone into sharp reverse since Jade was diagnosed. For that fact alone she is to be lauded.

Yes she did do a lot to bring the importance of cervical cancer into the media and as a result there has been an increase in the number of women going for tests. This can only be seen as a ggod thing.
One minute the media in this country are slating someone and then when they are ill and then die the media change their ideas. Isn't that what Parkinson was saying or at least that it how I understood.
She was mouthy and came from a council estate but so do many other people it doesn't make her any less a person but neither does it make her a martyr or a saint.

Echoing what a lot of people think doesn;t make you 'brave', or indeed 'right' - it makes you the voice of a section of the public, nothing more or less.
Parkinson has spent a career hiding his curmudgeonly miserable nature under a plethora of showbiz interviews so wet and warm you could bath a baby in them.
Now retired, he seems to feel the need to embrass his 'professional Yorkshireman' side - the sort of person who thinks 'believing in plain speaking ...' is an excuse to be rude to people.
Yes the media coverage is a nonsense, but that is the media we have because it;s the media we want. Not all of us obviously, but enough to make Jade Goody an industry for a large part of her adult life - and death.
Personally, I couldn;t care less if Parkinson chooses to bite the hand that feeds him now his money is made - never enjoyed his shows, although he is a sports jorunalist par excellance.
