There are plenty of mosquito repellants available...try Boots.
my dad used to put me to bed at night & say "nighty night, mind the bugs don't bite - but if they do - then bite the bu55ers back".

If you get bitten twice then you are not learning from your past mistakes.

Once bitten twice shy...
So what happens if you get bitten twice?

Then its obvious that the garlic and holy waters not working! I suggest coming back during daylight and driving a stake deep into their undead beating heart!
Then you dont just die , you turn into a fully fledged vampire.

Didnt you ever watch any vampire films ??
...either that or there are a lot of bugs out that that you are irresistable to.

are you orrrible or summit??'
If it's man trouble do what Lillie Allen says in her song and work your way through his mates!!
I imagine the words once and twice do not have their usual modern meanings here. The word twice must mean second time, and once means first time. Like skipping and counting the jumps, once, twice.

Therefore the meaning is: If bitten the first time one tries something, then the second time, one will be shy. A more concise modern translation of the phrase would be first time bitten, second time shy. But that is too garbled and lengthy for idioms.

The following: Once bitten, two times shy is almost certainly not the correct meaning. The saying could be generalised to:Once bitten, twice bitten, thrice shy.

This means that if you are bitten the first two times, you will be shy the third time. This could be shortened to:

Twice bitten, thrice shy.
sandmaster....aren't mates condoms?
Or is that what you meant?
Naive of the Balearics.
No leg. I don't think I'm horrible. Just very busy and don't have time for socialising and going out. Farm work is very tiring, up early every morning, so when evening comes, just too knackered to bother.
I have a holiday coming up soon, so you never know, I might get my first bite then.

;-)
Lexie - I think that is a lovely thing to be told. It would make my heart sing too.

(I mean, what you dad says to you about doing a good day's work ... not about being asked if you were 'orrible or summat!)

Ooops - have I got the wrong thread here? Never mind...
