Yes because in the time between the 2 flashes they can see how far you've travelled and work out your speed.  I imagine that this is corroborative evidence to go with the radar having sensed your speed in the first place.

I havn't been done by one. Just one where i live and there is nothing to indicate that it is there. Just wandered if there should be.

I think the marks on the road are there in case one car is being overtaken by another. By comparing the cars' positions relative to the marks in the two pictures you would be able to tell which was going fastest.

Not sure about whether they must be there by law or not though. I thought there had to be a sign up warning you that there was a camera ahead, but I might be wrong.

The markings on the road are intended for double-checking the speed recorded by the camera.  This is done manually when the picture is examined later.  Unfortunately that procedure does not seem to be carried out.  About three months ago, a bus driver was accused of driving through a town at 81 m.p.h.  His tachograph confirmed the common sense answer that his speed was 29 m.p.h.  I gather the lower speed was confirmed in the way Tim describes.  The authorities glibly blamed it on 'technical and human error', but what if it was you or I and the difference was only a few m.p.h.?

from what I know, the GATSO cameras which flash at you have road markings. The TRUVELO, which work on an infra red type system and do not flash at you (these look different to the GATSO) do not have road markings. So I think by law there does not have to be markings, just signs advising you of the cameras.

Why put up warning signs? It just enables the idiots to slow down until they are past the camera. If you can't spot the camera then you are going too fast in the first place.

Totally agree gef............Here in Sussex it's even announced on the radio and published in the paper  ---> Doh.....hey fancy doing a mugging, no police in East street between 10-11:30.....What's the point!!!!

Don't need to be road markings, otherwise the police would have to be out with a paintbrush every time they set up a mobile camera!

Sorry Famous5 but the policeman with the camera will give evidence to the court that in his judgement you were exceeding the speed limit.  This will be corroborated by the evidence of the camera.  This is why the radar cameras have 2 sources of evidence.  1st that the radar senses you are exceeding the limit and 2ndly that they have photographic evidence to corroborate it.

I know nothing of the infra-red type though, any answers?
