I have come to this conclusion let people ask what they want, let people answer what they want and those that do not want to see the answers DO NOT LOOK.

Halcyondays and squarebear. I can understand your belief that anyone wanting assistance should be given it, but squarebear didn't answer one of the questions that I put previously.The Rainbow quizzes are particularly challenging. Is it fair to people who ransack dictionaries, thesauruses, even the internet under their own steam, and send in entries with a few wrong guesses, that other people can just get several answers given to them on a plate? Surely there's something amiss there. As for my having a look at the site, I'm not in need of answers, but enjoy the exchanges.

Don't you think that some of you people need to get a life? If you see a question posted that obviously relates to a specific quiz what is stopping you from moving on to the next question where you can show your obvious prowess and intelligence? There are an awful lot of people who are either new to cryptic quizzes or need to see how a question can be answered so that in the future they can go solo. This is supposed to be fun and the more people get interested enough to send in their answers, the more money can be raised for charity.

I was discussing this differing of opinion with a quiz setter this afternoon and her take on the matter was one that I must admit I had not really considered.
If a quiz is downloaded with payment sent with answers and
if people are unable to fill in maybe threequarters of the answers (which maybe would happen more without this site),
they would not send sheet and money in so therefore charity fund would be losing potential income.
The quiz she sets is not downloadable but relies heavily on what she calls"repeat business" from the follow on quizzes, and she felt once again this site has helped boost that income.
I asked would she stop setting quizzes , her response, never while there is a need to raise much needed funds.

So there seems to be differences of opinion even among the people who set the quizzes.

I have said before most of my quizzes are scans which in a way is the same as getting them by email but there is no way having got one I wouldnt send it in no matter how many I had done

I just worry that people will stop setting the more difficult ones which must take hours to set and that would be a great loss and it does seem to be happening a bit

I totally agree. If you stop and think about it, answering cryptic questions is so much harder than answering general knowledge ones. With a dictionary and an encyclopedia anyone can answer straightforward questions but with cryptic you have to learn to think a totally different way, therefore you need examples and explanations as to how you arrive at an answer, and you learn from other people. Do you think that people would be bothered to send off money for something they mayvbe would have no idea about and even if they did they would not repeat the process if they weren't able to make a decent stab at it. Also this quiz has been running since March 1st and if you look at the question boxes there have been very few requests for answers out of the 100 questions set, so just what is all the fuss about?

But how many ask how the answer is derived and some are far from obvious so are they really learning how to do them

It strikes me as odd that you only pay once you've done the quiz. Surely, it would make more sense to charge �1 per quiz sheet?

The vast majority of quizzes ask that you send your entry fee with your request for the quiz to get money "up front".

(The Rainbow quiz is one of the few exceptions)

The charity/organisation has your money already, you having given a donation (of whatever) so the charity and you are in the same position irrespective of whether you finish the quiz or not.

The only way to practice cryptic clues is to have a go.

Asking for answers to see how they are arrived at is an odd way of doing things surely?

There are an awful lot of people who do the Rainbow charity quiz and do it twice a year and don't live in the U.K. Sending off money is never a problem (and we invariably send more) but just try and send a S.A.E. each time and see how you get on! If Rainbow don't have a problem with us downloading, and they don't otherwise they wouldn't do it, why should everyone else? Just asking....

Most smaller quizzes are run by people who aren't au fait with computers and uploading etc.
They prepare their quizzes and photocopy as many as they need and send them on (after they get your entry fee)
They rely on the money up front to cover their costs and to support their particular cause rather than rely on funds coming in afterwards.

The Rainbow quiz is still one of the exceptions along with Whatquiz and Learnburn
