Thanks for the reply terambulan. I think that I may not have made myself clear in my original post, what I would like to do is to remove the existing gas fire fronted gas back boiler and replace it with a wood burning stove plus free standing gas boiler. To fit the wood burning stove into the chimney breast, we would need to open up the 'hole' at the back of the grate so I thought that we could make an inglnook type fireplace. I wondered if there were fire restrictions which involved asbestos etc. and how the existing chimney breast would have to be supported.......a beam ot what?
