What does LOL mean when people sign off with it on message boards ?

"Laughing out loud". Variations include ROFL (rolling on the floor laughing) and LMAO (laughing my a**e off). Thankfully, some of us still use whole words!

In chatrooms etc, *LOL* = laughs out loud; *LMAO* = laughs my a$$ off ; *ROTFLMAO* = rolls on the floor laughing my a$$ off; *BS*=big smile; *G*= grins; *EG* =Evil grin; ^5 = high five; etc..... Just a shorthand way of expressing emotion in a textual context.

Also means lots of love, especially when signing off.

Useful for text messages but it seems to be one of those expressions that's gone public so it appears on sites like this one. Trouble is you can never be quite sure what it means - one recent user complained that another user was insulting her by writing lol when the first one hadn't said anything funny (the second user said she hadn't meant she was laughing out loud at all, though didn't say what she had meant); so make sure your meaning's clear.
