how far does a road sign have to be from the kerb?

i got a ticket the other day from stopping in a no stopping area. the sign was not very visable and was 15 foot away from the layby.
all i need to no is how far has the lamp poast with the sign on have to be away from the layby or kerb.
please help. thank you
