Having spoke to a street sweeper in the pub last night, he told me that they were asked to take some offenders for community service, half did not turn up, the ones that did just stood around talking on their phones and didn't put any effort into it, as  they have no discipline controll or experience most were a nightmare to have onboard and they could not wait to get rid of them.

I say bring back the birch, conscription for the prolific offenders, prisons harder with smaller cells no tvs or other luxurys.

Orange is not a colour to embarrass them. Make them wear pink or lilac.

Yes - but only if they are male!

Then again some males might like pink or lilac!!

think the orange uniforms will work the same way as ASBO's and ABC's have, and they'll become trendy.  I don't think the majority of young offenders will be embarrassed to wear them.  I think that with one leg pulled up, some blinging trainers, heavy chains, designer sunglasses and fresh hair cut, they are likely to be the 'coolest' kids around.  See Akon's "Locked Up" video in the orange boiler suits.
yes, the fashion for jeans riding so low they're practically round your knees is basically prison chic - when you go to jail and they take away your belt so you won't hang yourselves. So the young and cool and crazy want to look like criminals.

What about introducing  petticoat punishment?

If this don't stop em nothing will

I don't like degrading people at all, and cannot see how it would improve their behaviour on release to be dressed in orange outfits.  Sorry to buck the trend!

Armbands seem more fair and people would then know what the offenders were doing, if they really feel they have to know!   Is the scheme  there to punish and reform the offenders or to give satisfaction to those who like to bring their knitting and watch?

Please don't tell me I am a liberal, etc. etc.  I have no sympathy at all for the offenders and think they should be punished justly, but should not be made to look stupid.

I think also that Natalie 1982 is completely right in what she says.

I meant to say I think degrading people causes them to become more aggressive.

Oh, very pretty pic's LD!
Orange outfits seems a bit over the top to me noting the point made about sizing.... how about something such as a high viz jacket - you'd only need small, medium and large? With "community service" printed on the back or something. They'd be easier to spot than armbands but more cost effective?
Good Idea Otrere.  Not  from what normal workpeople wear, looks professional, states they are serving the community  and isn't degrading.  Well done.
*Not different from what normal workpeople wear.
