Click http://www.demographia.com/db-ukcities.htm for populations in 2000 of top English cities. Area is a different matter...for example, the actual City of London is strictly just a square mile. I'll leave this aspect to someone else!
London, Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Birmingham

From Quizmaster's answer we find largest, in descending order of population, are; London, B'ham, Leeds, Sheffield, L'pool. jif2003 gives another list. Would this be by area??

london- 7,172,091

birmingham- 970,892

glasgow - 629,501

liverpool - 469,017

leeds- 443,247
