Hi does anyone know what rendering and reflashing a stone chimney involves? Is rendering different from repointing and if so likely to be a bigger/smaller job than repointing? Not really familiar with these terms.
All a bit abstract I know sorry, Buying first house and just looking for some very rough indication of amount of work/likely cost before placing an offer.

Thanks

Repointing = pulling out (crumbling) mortar between the bricks (or stones) to a depth of about 20mm then refilling with fresh mortar.
Rendering = covering the whole of the existing surface with a mix of soft sand/cement to produce a smooth surface. Requires finishing with paint or similar.
Reflashing = replacing the material used at the joints between chimney and roof that prevents water ingress. Lead sheet is the most often used flashing material.

Cheers buildersmate. That's helped clear things up for me a bit
Hi - when we had a Victorian cottage donkey's years ago, this tackled this job ourselves - well at least the repointing and reflashing. All the materials you'll need are readily available and it's not that difficult if you take care and don't mind heights. The quotes that came in to us from builders were pretty hefty I recall. Of course nowadays there are lots more people competing for work, so you should be able to get it done a lot more cheaply these days. Just be sure to get several written quotes. A verbal quote can often go up when it comes to paying the bill. Good luck.
Hi Hella
Just wanted to add something to what the others have said. As for costs - even simple roofwork or chimney repairs will need good access - some sort of scaffolding. This can often cost as much as the job itself - sometimes more - especially if the roof is hard to get at, or, it's several storeys.
Something to bear in mind :o)

Thanks for the replies everyone. And good point about the scaffolding cost The Builder - the house is several stories high.
