Avast and AVG used together are ones that I use and find them excellent. Make sure with AVG that you download the free edition as they also have a 'superior' paid version.

Hope this helps (both are free)
don't even think of running two scanners
the rule is
1 virus
1 firewall
and as many malware scanners as you can eat
(I think most people will agree with this)

the bit we all differ on is what brand to go for
and to an extent it depends on your surfing habits
bbc and ab - a free set of tools is good enough
avira and avg both do freebies

if you have a couple of quid to spend ... an all in one suite is probably your best bet

the current winner of all the mag reviews is avira
it replaced kaspersky who held top spot for 3 years (and that's probably part of why it was replaced)

both come with a 1 month trial
kaspersky will give you another 60 days if you register at
http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/safeonline

and an oem copy is a cheap way of getting it

Does AVG actually protect you at all? I have always had AVG installed but recently it let in a virus that trashed my Windows and I had to re-install. I also found that AVG slowed everything down. I've now installed Comodo and that seems to be rather good and incudes a firewall, so I've got rid of zonealarm as well. I guess only time will tell if I've made the right choice, but I certainly do not want to have to reinstall Windows again!
avg is worth every penny .......!

I think the people who like it just don't go to the places where viruses live
however my anti giraffe spray works a treat

I've moved over from AVG (for similar reasons to those above) and have gone with Antivir (so have others):-

Also check out Malware Bytes:- http://www.malwarebytes.org/

and also Combofix (not for Vista):-
