There are several methods available. The one I can recommend unreservedly is an ultrasound scarer. The device has to be powered. It uses a sensor to detect the cat and then emits a high-pitched noise (inaudible to humans). The cat quickly finds somewhere esle to do it's business. WARNING do not set up the scarer where a cat could get trapped and be unable to escape the noise (say in an alleyway). If this is not suitable because you actually own a cat then the next best thing is to grow plants that cats hate round the lawn edge.Consult your local garden centre.
i'm afraid the only thing that worked with my neighbours cat was a sonic sensor device that sends a high pitched sigenal when they trigger the sensor. about 50 from a garden centre
There's also a device called "the scarecrow". It has a motion sensor that when set off will spray water like a yard sprinkler.
