T shirt transfer paper

I have just got some off ebay and have followed the instructions but it won't work ! It says to put the transfer paper on the t shirt with the picture facing upwards, cover with greaseproof paper and iron ! Surely, the picture should be facing down onto the fabric ?
The only way I could do it was peel the back off the transfer paper and iron it on that way. What on earth am I doing wrong ??

Copy the image to the transfer as a mirror image and place the transfer picture side down on the material.

It says on the instructions not to use 'mirror image mode'.
