you could get a black fitted shift style dress and have it drapped round your shoulders.
people do sometimes wear black as a base colour to a wedding. just think men wear black suits there. not much different but you will need a splash of colour.
sorry dont know what size you are either but how about a black dress from somewhere like M&S or BHS. quite a classic cut and then a bit more modern shawl. Try the high street for shawls. Oasis do good ones at the moment.
Hi codie n....Also - you could try getting a planish dress (maybe something biased cut/a line so it's a bit floaty) and wearing a really pretty scarf/wrap/cardy. There are some lovely scarves and you don't have to go mad with prices. You could play it safe by looking in Tie Rack...If you're going for the cardy option then you could even get a skirt and wear a vest underneath (depening on how formal the wedding is and if you're going to take off the cardy) - there was a spread on wedding attire in a mag I bought a couple of weeks ago and the girl in that wore an outfit like it.
I think it's about the accessories though. If you haven't got lots of money then wear something suitable you've already got or just get a reasonable priced outfit and save some money for the accessories - they can really make an outfit. Dorothy Perkins have some really nice ones for reasonable prices, so do Marks and even good old BHS don't do too bad for themselves. If you pick a colour that suits you and stick to that you can't go wrong. I always think a more expensive lipstick or gloss makes you feel really nice as it goes on much smoother.
Happy shopping!
Why not try Bon Marche? They sell very reasonably priced clothes and do a good size range - most of their stuff ranges from a 10 to size 24. You can get jackets for around 20 and they do summer suits and dresses as well as more causal clothes. Also, try your local market - I got a wonderful wedding hat there fro 15 - similar hats were selling in John Lewis for 75.
As far as the black goes... I don't really care much about fashion rules myself, but I remember Trinny & Susannah saying that wearing a colour with black cheapens the black and the colour.
How about black and white? At a wedding I was at recently there was a woman wearing a long floaty black skirt with a white print on it, a black top and a white evening type cardigan / jacket. A white suit type jacket possibly plus a black / white hat would have gone really well too. She looked very smart. I was quite jealous as it's the sort of thing I might have chosen and yet I was dressed in an unflattering green bridesmaid's dress which was not the sort of thing I'd choose!
All black might be a bit much I agree...
Codie, don't worry what other people think about the colour. Wear something that makes you feel good, and that's comfortable.
Posh weddings usually involve a sit down meal followed by the inevitable dancing. Wear shoes that you can bear to have your feet in for a long time, and clothes that aren't too tight. Don't forget to wear comfortable but supportive underwear - cotton blends are best.
A friend wore some of those miraculous "magic knickers" under her skin tight frock and ended up having to take them off halfway through the evening as they were so uncomfortable and she was sweating buckets dancing in them. Removing the magic knickers meant her dress looked dreadful without them smoothing out all the little bumps and underwear ridges etc. Also, she only had a small handbag with her so she left the magic knickers in the ladies loo - when she went to find them at the end of the evening someone had taken them!
