Yes provided the cage is big enough for it to move around and it is allowed out last thing at night and as early as possible in the morning, to allow it to go to the toilet, otherwise you will be forcing it to either hold on or mess its cage, neither of which is desirable. Properly used they are a godsend.
Instead of 'cage' try to think of it as the dog's refuge. This is the place where it knows it is safe, no-one should try to force him into or out of it. With a young dog it's good to put a blanket over the top and sides so that it is really private and cosy. Lankeela is quite right in what she says. The main thing is to remember that it should not be used as a punishment, it is a safe place for the dog.
The pup should always be fed in the crate with the door left open so that he can choose when to go in and out.
Always ensure that children know that when the dog goes into the crate they must leave him alone.
